General Warning Signs of Suicide

  • Previous suicide attempt and/or rehearsing suicide attempts
  • Talking about suicide and/or preoccupation with death and dying
  • Increased use of alcohol and other drugs
  • Hopelessness
  • Unexplained anger, aggression and irritability
  • Withdrawal from friends and family; isolation
  • Comments like “I won’t be a burden much longer” or “I can’t take this pain much longer”
  • Giving away possessions
  • Sudden cheerfulness after period of depression
  • Lack of interest in things they used to enjoy
  • Increased sadness, anxiety, irritability, boredom, restlessness, suspicion, and/or agitation
  • Abrupt decline in grades or obsessive worry about job performance
